Solihull College Prospectus

Farva Hussain  25/10/2013

Workshop: Location photography

Brief: Photographs that represent the college to be used in the Solihull prospectus.

We were put into groups for todays brief. The images that we had to capture;

1: Students talking together, this had to show that they where in the college, and had to represent a relaxed environment.

2: Teacher and student using a computer, this had to in the computer room showing the student working.

We first started by looking for possible locations for our shots, thinking about the available lights and locations. The recce images are below:

Location one: The college foyer, this would have in its background the exhibition of students, we could elevate the image and take it from above. The image benefitted from a lot of ambient light. After discussing this with our tutor James, we decided that there was too much strong daylight and florescent light in the image that was hard to control. The would be too many things that would reflect and bounce light, for example the wood and white boards. In the end we did try to set up the light but were unable the find a power source as the portable battery pack was not fully charged.

Location 2: The library, here I approached a group of students who gave us their permission to be in the images. We also asked the library staff. We used the large window for the main light and would used the flash to fill behind them. We moved the table so that we could get a better composition for the image. In the background where books and this set the scene to show the student at work.

On our return the library the pupil had left, and there wasn’t many students that were willing to be in our photograph.

Location 3: college common room, her we thought we could have some students sitting on chairs, with the background of the busy common room. After discussing with James, the background would be too vast to light correctly.

Location 4: James found this location our tutor, after discussing our other locations. We had to find a location where we had access to the mains for our lights. We choose the canteen. We asked some students who were willing to pose for us. We moved the table closer to the window to set up our set; we had James pose over the students to show the group engaging with the teacher.
The below images are before we set the lights. There is ambient light available and I composited the image so that I was at there level. This changed the image making it better, instead of the shoot from above.

The brief that I worked on is below:

This first image was too dark because the light from behind was stronger.

f 5.6 1/30s ISO 100 17-85 mm lens

For this image we increased the f. number and also the ISO, this gave the forefront of the image lighter. The strong sunlight that was shining onto James we blocked using a reflector

f. 8 1/60s ISO 200 17-85 lens

The image was still dark, we slowed the shutter speed, this gave an even light between the background and the forefront, and also I zoomed into the image.
f.8 1/30s ISO 200 17-85mm lens

My final chosen image:

I asked a teacher to pose for us. This image shows the students and teacher engaging together.

f.8 1/30s ISO 200  17-85 mm lens

The lighting set up for the shoot, we used the reflector the block light that was coming in onto the teacher. We only used one light with an umbrella which gave an even spread of light.

Evaluation:

This was the first time that I worked with other people in the group and it was good opportunity to get to know them. We worked well as a team, two us did the first task in the canteen, and then we helped the other to do their task. It was difficult to find a location that had the right balance of light and I learnt how reducing the shutter speed can help balance the strong light from the back, but we kept the power of the flash the same. We also used the reflector to block light. I used a zoom lens that was appropriate for the image.
