Water Drop/splash with Jon Wild

Had the opportunity to learn how to capture water droplets or splash. These type of images are seen in commercial product photography.

Jon demonstrating his splash setup
Equipment:

Canon 60d/SD card
Macro Lens
Tripod/ release cable
Speed light
Flash cable

Set up:
Table/ stands
Water/ bag
Tray / towels
Background

Health and safety:

Having water around electrical equipment can be dangerous so care has to be take to keep the two apart, make sure cable's are set out of the way to avoid any trip ups. Ensure that the stands supporting are sturdy and the set up is secure. Keep the hand towel near to clean any spills.

The speed light is used to freeze the splash, the speed light was set to ETTL, which with the canon gun measures the amount of light needed by bouncing on the focus point. The speed light can be set to be faster to give a sharper image. This can be set on the speed light its self. The tricky part is to focus into the point where the water was going to drop, by using a pen at this point help find this.
We also were shown how to make the images more creative by using printed sheet sheets that would be caught in the reflection of the water and with the ripples made  a more interesting image.

Above an example of how the drop, also known as a crown because of the shape can be used. Mostly several images are put together to compose one image.

That’s “RT” as in “radio transmitter.” This new Canon flash has radio triggers built right into it.
This triggering technology may eventually replace the old light-based triggering system (which is also built into the 600), because the older system is less reliable, limited by distance, and requires a line-of-sight between the master and slave.

  1. Great water crown. Like how you have taken it a bit further and created an "ad" as well. Well done.
